Wine World Warehouse opens Wednesday

The 23,000 square foot wine store that replaces Office Max at 400 NE 45th St. in Wallingford will open as planned on Wednesday, December 1.

Wine World owner and sommelier David LeClaire told us last month the enormous store will “blow people away.” “There’s nothing like what we’re doing in the Northwest,” he said. With its location at the I-5 exit and visibility from the freeway, LeClaire intends for his Wine World to attract oenophiles from all over Puget Sound and beyond.

Wine World Warehouse employees were stocking the shelves and about a dozen staffers were getting training when we stopped by to take pictures this past weekend.

Here’s how the space looks:

The store is slated to open at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday but close at 4:00 for a private event. Thursday night from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. is a public grand opening celebration — if you see spotlights in Wallingford, you know why.

  1. I see an awful lot of open space between those aisles there. That space is huge but I don't think they can match the selection of a place like Esquin. And of course the real merit of a wine shop isn't size, but quality. Maybe they've got it, maybe not, but they're going to have to be pretty good to beat even their tiny competitor up the street, City Cellars, which is small but doesn't have a bad bottle in the place.

My sneaking suspicion is that they were hoping that 1100 would pass and their wine license would instantly be transformed into a spirits license, which would have filled all that space up nicely. Alas, no. I'll still check it out.

  2. I too noticed how little it looked like Esquin. Hopefully they'll have some good prices, and have more wines in stock than it appears from those photographs.

  3. I'd be interested to contact the owner of this new business. We live directly across the street from this building on the 4th Avenue side, and we were given zero advanced warning of tonight's private party that has more or less shut down our street. No parking (as if there's much to begin with), drunk people up and down the strret being loud, and spot lights inches from our windows? If this is how a responisble business owner treats the residents of the neighborhood he's moved into, he should be ashamed of himself.

If anyone has contact information for Mr. LeClaire, I'd love to have a quick chat with him.

  4. You live in close proximity to I-5 and University District drunks and you're complaining about the private party??! ……. Seriously?

  5. If you read my comment clearly, you'd know my complaints are with the traffic jam that completely backed up cars for the full length on 4th Avenue, around the corner and across the freeway overpass. I can't say for sure that you live near us, but we do not get a lot of freeway/u-district party noise. 4th is a pretty quite neighborhood. My issue here is the lack of consideration taken. A business owner moves into a neighborhood, it is common courtesy to connect with the residents and let us know that he's bringing a circus to town for an evening. It's simply good business practice.
