Tangletown’s Meridian Market goes dark

Thanks to My Green Lake for this story, by Amy Duncan.

The lights are off and the doors are locked at Meridian Market (2201 N 56th St).

The market has been a fixture in Tangletown for three years.  It has been struggling since last winter, and was officially put up for sale two weeks ago.  A craigslist ad lists the sale price at $250,000.

When I spoke with owner Wally Wright on August 11, he had no plans of shutting down the market before it was sold.  However, My Green Lake tipster Ann tells us that the market was closed on Thursday night, and horseknuckle reports that it was still shut on Saturday evening.

Phone calls to the market go unanswered, and a peek inside reveals groceries on the shelves and food in the deli case, but no employees in sight.

  1. So, so sad.Anyone know why they started to struggle? The bad economy just catching up? I loved this little market…a great place to walk to, they tried to use locally grown produce (I think a neighbor sold them pears to sell a while back), and really friendly people. Even if it was just for coffee. While Zokas across the street is great, they are always too crowded, so it was nice to be able to meet clients at the Market while having a snack and coffee (and still getting WiFi).
