SDOT to fix "lake" on Burke-Gilman Trail

October 26th, 2010 by master

Cyclists know that in a decent rain, like the ones we’ve has recently, a “lake” forms where the trail crosses Meridian Ave. N., in front of Urban Surf. Publicola recently ran a story on the problem.

We stopped by the area yesterday and talked to Seattle Department of Transportation’s North End Asphalt Crew Chief, Steve Hoyos. He told us that cyclists and pedestrians won’t need to wait long for the dip in the trail to be fixed; if he gets a traffic control plan this week, work should start on Monday, November 1.

SDOT will divert people off the trail (bikes will go to Northlake Way via a temporary asphalt trail, pedestrians will be directed up to N. Pacific/N. 34th St.), and the project should be complete in a couple of weeks.¬†Hoyos estimated 10 working days to dig out concrete, pour new concrete and put asphalt on that. “The work’s not that big a deal — it’s the rerouting that’s a big deal,” he said.

Signage will be up shortly to warn cyclists and pedestrians of the impending detours.

Thanks to Robby Delaware for the tip!

Sat.: Spokespeople ride to Lake Union Park

October 1st, 2010 by master

We’ve heard raves about the new Lake Union Park, which opened just last weekend. This Saturday, October 2, you can check out the new park, get some exercise, meet fellow cyclists and enjoy some of the last remaining sunny days of the season.

Spokespeople ride leaders Michael Snyder and Cathy Tuttle, certified by Cascade Bicycle Club, will begin the 8-mile, relatively flat ride from the SOUTH end of Wallingford Playfield (at Densmore and N 42nd) at 2 p.m.

New to urban cycling? Spokespeople is for you:

New riders are welcome — in fact, getting new riders on the road is the reason we do the rides! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come no later than 1:45 if you are new to riding on the road, new to riding in groups, or if you need any help with adjusting your helmet or bike. Please also call a day in advance if you’d like to buy a good quality helmet from us for $10 and we’ll bring our sack of helmets. Helmets are required on our rides. If there is heavy rain, we won’t do the ride.

Bike-car collision on N. 45th St.

August 9th, 2010 by master

On August 4 a car made a righthand turn off N. 45th St. without signaling and hit a bicyclist, according to a report on Bikewise.org.

Bikewise, a Cascade Bicycle Club site, collects accounts of bike crashes throughout the city and lists hazards for cyclists and bike thefts. A good resource for cyclists and a good reminder for drivers that bikes share the road.
