Sunday, October 9, is the Shine on Seattle Ride for Community Solar. The ride is 10 miles, and begins at Gas Works Park. The ride will raise money to buy shares for schools in Seattle City Light’s Community Solar Project. Each rider can choose to ride as a sponsor for the school of their choice. Each school will also receive a recognition plate that will become a permanent part of the Community Solar Project picnic shelter at Jefferson Park in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood.

According to their website, the ride will:

  • Fund solar panels through the Seattle Community Solar Project and give the energy credits to Seattle schools
  • Create educational opportunities for local students
  • Increase awareness of Seattle’s renewable energy resources
  • Support construction of solar-paneled picnic shelters via the “Community Solar Project”
  • Build community ties across our neighborhoods

Six schools from Wallingford, Queen Anne, Magnolia, and Ravenna are taking part in the ride. The goal is for each school to raise $600 (the cost of a share). The ride starts at 9 a.m. and will follow the Burke-Gilman Trail for five miles, with a turnaround just south of Magnuson Park for a total of 10 miles.
