This afternoon we heard screams and cheers coming from Meridian Park, sounds beyond the typical ultimate-frisbee jubilation.
We headed over to the park to find more than a hundred more people wearing headbands, surrounding piles of tomatoes. We learned from Dana, a mom who was waiting for her daughter, that this was an annual Camp Tomato, a day of potluck, games and music created by Seattle musician Jason Webley.
These “Tomato Scouts” were playing their final game of the day, a version of Capture the Flag called “Tomato Raid” with hundreds of tomatoes.
We suspected that with all those tomatoes, there was bound to be a food fight (as there had been last year, a spectator told us). Alas, we had to leave before the end of the event.
This is the fifth Camp Tomato.
Here’s a taste of Webley’s music, from his best-known album, “Against the Night.”
