Farmers market staying put this year

With four weeks until the first Wallingford farmers market of the season, we wanted to get the latest information on its status.

As we reported last month, the market will begin on May 19 in the south parking lot of the Wallingford Center. At that time, Chamber of Commerce president Kara Ceriello was pushing for the market to grow onto the Wallingford Avenue parking lane. If SDOT didn’t grant permission, Ceriello and organizer Jon Hegeman looked into moving the market to an L-shaped space at Interlake and N. 45th St.

We checked in with Ceriello yesterday, and she felt confident that the Wallingford Avenue extension would happen in time to accommodate more vendors as the market grows through the summer, though SDOT has yet to give its official approval. The Interlake option is off the table for this year.

She and Hegeman will continue to explore the possibility of closing down a block or two on Wallingford Avenue on Saturdays to create a weekend market starting next year. They’re also open to moving the market to the Interlake location next year to create a Saturday market.

Have an opinion on whether the market should be on Wednesdays or Saturdays? Vote in this poll or leave a comment below.
