If some of your fellow citizens seem a little more mellow than usual today, perhaps they’re marking 4/20, the day that’s become the annual celebration of cannabis culture.
To observe 4/20, organizers of Initiative 1068, which aims to legalize marijuana in Washington State, will have volunteers at Gas Works Park this afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. gathering signatures. The sponsor of the intiative, Sensible Washington, needs to collect 241,153 valid signatures by July 2 to get the measure on the ballot this November.
4/20 events aren’t common in Seattle, I-1068 campaign director/initiative co-author Philip Dawdy told us, “due to classically bad weather and it’s also a Tuesday.” He had no expectations on numbers of signatures volunteers might gather this afternoon because the activity is weather dependent: “People don’t like signing when it’s raining.” The forecast says we’ll have showers throughout the day.
