File this one under “good problems to have”: On Saturday Trophy Cupcakes sold out of their buttercream-topped confections. Why? Between Friday and Sunday night, Trophy Cupcakes sold 8613 Groupon deals whereby the purchaser gets a dozen cupcakes for $15. That’s a Groupon record for Seattle — and many more sales than owner Jennifer Shea expected. “We thought it would be popular, but didn’t think it would be that popular,” she told us yesterday afternoon.
Trophy depleted its cupcake supply around 5 p.m. Saturday, despite doubling production to six thousand cupcakes for its three locations in anticipation of customers cashing in their deals. Shea posted on the Groupon site that afternoon, “Whoa, it seems like everyone who bought the deal has decided to use it today! We made thousands extra but are still about to run out at Wallingford center and The Bravern. University Village will probably still have stock until about 6. Yikes…more cupcakes tomorrow! So sorry!”
If everyone who bought the Groupon deal uses it, Shea and her employees will bake up 103,356 cupcakes to fulfill orders over the next year. Just the thought has put us in a sugar coma.
Shea said the only other time they’d run out of cupcake was two years ago, the day after her appearance on the Martha Stewart show.
The Trophy Groupon deal is no longer available.
I don’t work at Microsoft, so I can’t afford a dozen Trophy cupcakes at their regular price. 🙁
