An area high school student has been named one of three semifinalists from Seattle Public Schools in the 48th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. William Spurr from Roosevelt High School joins Olachi O. Oleru from Garfield High School and Alexandra N. Ricks from Franklin High School for an opportunity to win one of about 800 scholarships worth more than $2.4 million.

The Seattle students share the recognition with 1,600 scholastically talented Black American high school seniors nationwide who earned top scores on the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, according to Teresa Wippel with Seattle Public Schools. Nearly 80 percent of all semifinalists are expected to reach the finalist standing, and half of the finalists will win an Achievement Scholarship Award.
