Community Council annual meeting tonight

Do you think every first Wednesday, “One of these days I’ve got to see what this Wallingford Community Council is all about?” If those Wednesdays are too packed, perhaps tonight’s Wallingford Community Council annual meeting could fit into your schedule. It’ll convene 6:30 to 9:00 tonight, May 26, in the Good Shepherd Center chapel (the top floor). Refreshments will be provided.

On the agenda, from Wallingford.org:

Councilman Mike O’Brien will be the featured speaker. Mike oversees the Department of Neighborhoods for the council, dealing with budget cutbacks that have hit DON particularly hard. Several District Coordinator roles were eliminated and satellite offices such as the one in Fremont were closed, calling into question the future structure of the DON. Also in attendance will be Veronica King, DON’s Director of Community-Building and Planning.

We will also touch on recent discussions that have been happening around merging the WCC with the Wallingford Neighborhood Office. The WNO operates the Kiddies Parade, Garden Tour, and Home Tour, plus it funds and operates the neighborhood office behind Tully’s. A merger would unify redundant operations and make it easier for Wallingford residents to find a place to contribute to/volunteer with their local community.

We also hope you consider becoming a member now or at the meeting by filling out our 2011 Wallingford Community Council Membership Application. We need a vital membership if we are to sustain our finances and represent the Wallingford community to the city. Examples of how funds have been spent in the past include land use enforcement, sponsoring neighborhood events like the Kiddies Parade, sponsoring neighborhood projects, and helping with necessities like July 4th toilets and curb bulb maintenance.
