John Stanford International School has a new principal to replace outgoing Kelly Aramaki: current Hamilton International Middle School assistant principal Jesely Alvarez. Interim Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Susan Enfield yesterday sent mail to JSIS parents announcing Alvarez’s appointment:

Today I am excited to announce a leadership change at John Stanford International School with the appointment of Jesely Alvarez as the new Principal, starting in the 2011-2012 school year. She replaces your current principal, Kelly Aramaki, who will serve as principal of Beacon Hill International School next year.

Since 2006, Ms. Alvarez has served as Assistant Principal at Hamilton International Middle School, where she led the development of the school’s Spanish and Japanese immersion program, collaborated on the district’s K-12 international school pathway and developed a school-wide service learning model with a global focus.

In addition, while at Hamilton Ms. Alvarez partnered with international, national and local organizations to provide grants for school improvement efforts in areas that included math, literacy, world languages, instructional approaches and strategies for closing the achievement gap.

Principal Alvarez started her career as a Spanish teacher, and also taught Language Arts and Social Studies at Madrona K-8 in the Edmonds School District. In 2002, she spent a year in Chiapas, Mexico as a Fulbright teacher.

She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington, her Master’s in Education from Antioch University and her Principal Certificate from the University of Washington’s Danforth Educational Leadership Program.

  1. one of her first policy changes is to implement an oath of loyalty aka the pledge of allegiance. wow! This action has divided teachers and parents and we are learning that Ms. Alvarez defers her responsibility to the state. Sadly, her leadership and community building skills are limited. not a good start for a school principal.
