Wallingford Farmers Market adds chef-only hours

It’s finally starting to feel like spring, so maybe it’s safe to start thinking about the farmers market, which will begin Wednesday, June 1, in its new location in Meridian Playground. The Seattle Farmers Market Association has added a new feature to the market: chefs-only hours when chefs will be able to quickly access fresh produce then get back to their restaurants. The first half hour of the weekly market, from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., will be open only to chefs. The market will be open to the public from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m., a half hour less than in previous years.

Meridian Ave. N. is on the left here; farmers market vendors would load in via Bagley Ave. N. The image shows the maximum number of stalls, 74.

Here’s more detail on the new market, including parking suggestions:

This new location not only offers the Wallingford Farmers Market a future, but it offers a bigger and brighter future at that, with plenty of room for growth, convenient access via foot, bike, bus or car, and a centralized location to serve the surrounding Wallingford community. Expect to see more vendors, greater variety and more deliciousness!

Meridian Park is a special location for Wallingford Farmers Market. It is the site of the Seattle Tilth Spring Plant Sale & Fall Harvest Faire – a beautiful, lush & green park setting with plenty of grass and trees, picnic tables and a terrific playground for the kids. It also resides directly behind the Good Shepherd Center, home to such like-minded organizations as Cascade Harvest Coalition and Seattle Tilth, as well as home to the Seattle Tilth’s Demonstration Gardens.

Wallingford Farmers Market will feature a special half-hour market just for chefs from 3:00-3:30 p.m., before the market opens for the public from 3:30-7:00 p.m. Chefs will be able to make arrangements with market farmers to pickup restaurant orders during this special half-hour chefs market and have easy, uncongested access to the market to get in and out quickly and easily! This mid-week chefs market will present an excellent opportunity for chefs to stock up their kitchens with great local ingredients direct from the producers just in time for the weekend.

Hours for the general public for Wallingford Farmers Market will now be from 3:30-7:00 p.m. These later hours will help reduce congestion around Meridian Park until most activities in its Good Shepherd Center have finished for the day. They are also more in line with the normal schedules of many Wallingford residents. Parking for Wallingford Farmers Market at Meridian Park will be most plentiful (and closest) along Meridian Avenue N, while market shoppers are asked not to park at Good Shepherd Center or along Sunnyside Avenue N.

Early Dismissal for Seattle kids tomorrow

Early Dismissal for Seattle kids tomorrow
  1. Just as a reminder – there is a school located at the Good Shepherd Center that gets out just before the market opens, so heed the request not to park at the Center or along Sunnyside. It is difficult to navigate that location between 3 and 3:30 when school is in session.

Otherwise, I am happy to see the farmer's market returning, and hope the new location works out.
