Significant snow this week?

Update 7:00 a.m., Jan. 11: Cliff Mass now predicts a dusting to a few inches of snow in Seattle this afternoon and night. Any accumulation should melt off in warming temperatures and rain tomorrow morning.

Update 8:30 a.m., Jan. 10: We had a good sustained flurry this morning, and it’s sticking.

Yesterday afternoon big wet snowflakes fell around Wallingford, melting on contact. While we saw no accumulation, forecasters are looking ahead to Tuesday night and Wednesday, when a significant snow event could occur.

As is typical here in Seattle, the forecast keeps shifting. At first, UW meteorologist Cliff Mass suggested it could be a historic snow event like the post-Christmas storm of 1996 (we remember it well but can’t seem to find photos of it). Then he backed off as forecasts showed it heading north, perhaps into Vancouver. Now the Weather Service says the model has it shifting a little more south, which could bring 4 inches or more in the Seattle area. “It’s still way too early to know what scenario will play out,” says the Weather Service.

So… who knows, but stay tuned!
