Now that the kids are going back to school after a long break, it’s time to break out the calendar and plan for public school tours if you have a child who’s entering kindergarten, middle school or high school this fall.

The Seattle Public Schools changed its student assignment plan, beginning in Fall 2010. Now all children are guaranteed a spot in their attendance area school, but parents can still apply to other schools (and cross their fingers that any space is available).

These are the elementary schools that feed into Hamilton Middle School and their tour information. If you don’t know your attendance-area school, find it using your address here. Wallingford families will be assigned to John Stanford, McDonald or B.F. Day if they don’t request another school during open enrollment.

  1. I called Hamilton and their open houses will be january 27th from 6-7 and feb 9th from 6-7. The info doesn't appear to be up on their Web site yet…

  2. Here's a bit more information about Salmon Bay K-8 ALTERNATIVE School. (Thank you for mentioning it in this story.)

Not all realize that you also have the choice to send your school to our regional (NW quadrant) alternative school Salmon Bay in Ballard. This is a K-8 school that uses an alternative education model. Learning is experiential and emphasizes project based learning with an active role for students in curriculum content as well as assessment.

The most common entry points are kindergarten (of course) as well as 6th grade when the number of kids per grade (not per classroom) increases from 40 to 120. Currently the sibling preference is the first attendance tiebreaker. Lottery is the second tiebreaker. Plans are underway to add a geographic zone around the school as the second tie-breaker, this would potentially make it harder to get in if you lived in Wallingford/Greenlake. (Let all school board representatives know if you have an opinion on this one.)

For more information about Salmon Bay see:
    http://www.salmonbayschool.org

(note that the district obtusely lumps the school under Option schools)
