KING 5 was at Gift of Grace Lutheran Church this morning, reporting on the SHARE (Seattle Housing and Resource Effort) homeless shelter that will open there tonight at 7 p.m. Up to 15 men and women will be housed in the church’s balcony. Some neighbors and many parents whose children attend the Huckleberry Forest Preschool in the church basement are angry with how the church has handled the addition of the shelter to the community.
The hours of the shelter and the preschool will not overlap, insists Pastor Jami Fecher, nor will they share any space.
This video contains footage from the community meeting on Sunday described in detail here.
On Monday KIRO ran this story about the Huckleberry Preschool parents’ concerns. It also features a tour of the shelter space.
Don't worry folks, in Ballard they only had one sex offender in the Ballard SHARE church. Level 3, the highest, a child rapist, 2 blocks from a day care center. SHARE didn't find him and report him, a neighbor did.
So enjoy. We had him in the neighborhood for 3 months.
There is an active discussion about the shelter going on at the sister site http://www.wallyhood.org
Sadly 1 in 5 young girls will be molested and it is almost always by someone in their family. To focus on the few identified sex offenders living in your community will give you a false sense of security. People who offend usually get out and they end up living where they used to live in many cases. Do a quick search on the Seattle police web site and I am sure you will see how many there already are.. Attacking the homeless does nothing to keep your kids safer.
No one has attacked the homeless, Georgia. The frustration is with how the city, SHARE, and the church kept this plan under wraps for months. Apples and oranges.
